A complete step-by-step guide to purchasing a second-hand vehicle safely and confidently in Sri Lanka.
Buying a used car in Sri Lanka can be a rewarding experience if you know what to look for. With the right preparation, you can find a reliable vehicle at a great price without falling into common traps.
1. Set Your Budget
Before browsing listings, decide on a firm budget that includes not just the purchase price but also insurance, registration transfer fees, and potential repair costs. A good rule of thumb is to keep 10–15% of the car's value in reserve for initial maintenance.
2. Choose the Right Vehicle Type
Consider your daily needs. If you're driving in Colombo traffic, a compact hatchback or sedan will be more economical. For upcountry or off-road driving, an SUV or 4WD may be more suitable.
3. Check the Vehicle History
Always request the original CR book (registration document) and verify the engine and chassis numbers match. Check for any outstanding loans on the vehicle through the Department of Motor Traffic.
4. Inspect Before You Buy
Never buy a vehicle without a thorough inspection. Check the bodywork for rust or filler, inspect under the hood for oil leaks, and take it for a test drive on both flat and uneven roads. If possible, take a trusted mechanic with you.
5. Complete the Transfer Properly
Ensure the ownership transfer is completed at the Department of Motor Traffic. Both buyer and seller must be present, and all dues and fines must be cleared before the transfer can proceed.
